Weekly expectations-
1. Reading log (weeks 1-9 only)
Do at least 15 minutes of silent reading every day (school days only although the more you read the better :)= keep track of your reading in a reading log (see example below-download the file)
Write down the date, what you were reading (name of book/story/article etc), and a couple sentences summarizing what it was about.
The choice of what you read is up to you but if you would like some ideas there are some links to websites in the reading ideas handout below. Reading you do for other classes can also count.
This is also an opportunity for you to learn or read about topics that interest you. Try to get off your screens or get outside and enjoy some time reading.

2. Timed writing (weeks 1-9 only)
Write on a topic of your choice for 10 minutes 2-3 times+ a week.
You must use proper sentences and grammar to the best of your ability.
While you can write about any topic you choose, if you would like some ideas or would like to practice specific types of writing see the writing ideas handout below.
Submit your writing at the end of each week by emailing it to Ms. Ashley at [email protected]

3. Weekly learning activities/assignments
These are to be done in addition to the reading log and topic writing choices.
You must complete the weekly learning activities/assignments and email them to Ms. Ashley at [email protected]
These will be listed by week with all handouts/instructions.
The most recently assigned activities/assignments will be listed first.

Assignment- Make sure narrative essay questions and narrative essay outline are done and submitted. Submit rough copy of narrative essay if you have not done so already. Then work on good copy of narrative essay. Good copy is due June 19th. When done, catch up on missing work. No more timed writes or reading logs from now until the end of the trimester.
Week 9- June 1-5, 2020
Assignment- Catch up on Missing work. Finish Narrative essay rough copy. Remember that you must do your narrative essay questions and outline before you can do your rough copy.
Week 8- May 25-29, 2020
Assignment- Add/Delete details to narrative essay outline as needed. Then write a rough copy of a narrative essay based on your outline from last week.
Week 7- May 19-22, 2020
Assignment- Read the narrative essay writing guidelines and topic choices. Then write an outline for the essay using the template provided.

Week 5- May 4-8, 2020
Assignment-
Read the poem Casey at the Bat and watch the youtube version below. Then complete the Casey at the Bat question. Links to the poem and assignment below.

Week 4- April 26- May 1, 2020
Assignment- No New Assignments. Catch up on what you are missing. New assignment next week. If you aren't missing anything then take a well deserved break. If you are looking for something to do- You can try some more poetry learning activities or writing some more poetry.
Week 3- April 19-24
Assignment -Identifying poetic devices
Use the link below to download the handout to practice identifying poetic terms in lines of poetry. You need to include the definition in your explanation. See instructions in handout. Answer as best as you can. I will go through the answers later. This will be due May 1st.

B) Learning activities- Getting to know your poetic terms-
Now that you have read through the definitions and found or created examples of the poetic terms it is time to start learning how to recognize them. Use the links below to discover various activities you can use to help you learn what the poetic terms are and how to recognize them in poetry.
You can do as many or as few as you need to help you learn the terms. Remember the objective is to learn the terms and to be able to identify them when you see them. You will probably want to have your definition sheet handy to help you with the activities.
You will need to email me a list of the activities you did, or the videos that you watched by April 24, 2020.

Week 1 Assignment- April 6-9, 2020-
Poetic terms- Clink on the link below to read up on poetic terms. We started on this activity before spring break. If you finished it before the break you can try to find some in songs or poems you like.
It will be due April 17, 2020.
The activity and the number of examples to find is on the assignment sheet.
