Week 1- March 8-March 12
Monday March 8
1. Anti Racism Gathering Zoom session- -We watched a session on Anti-Racism with 3 guest speakers. -Students took notes using the handout provided. -Download handouts and notes below.
2. Timed write #1- See tab labelled Timed Writes for details
3. Discussion on Anti-Racism Gathering
4. Went through course expectations and emergency procedures
2. Routes and Roots activity -Students did an activity to reflect on their family heritage (roots) and how their families got to Prince Rupert (routes). -Download handouts below. (due Thursday)
3. Silent reading activity #1- See tab labelled Silent reading activities for details.
4. Monkey Beach Research Project explanation -The project was explained and topics were picked.
2. Time to work on Monkey Beach Research project in the computer lab. (due Friday)
3. Enrichment activities - Students were given a list of enrichment activities. -Students were told that whenever they finish assignments they are to work on enrichment activities. -Students were told to pick an enrichment activity and hand in a proposal by Friday. -Download handout below.
2. Thesis statement and brainstorming practice -Thesis statements were explained and students practiced creating thesis statements and creating reasons to support them. -Download notes and handout below.
3.Silent reading activity #2- See tab labelled Silent reading activities for details.
4. Introduction to found poetry -The definition of poetry was discussed. Then students used the notes they created during the Silent reading activity and watching video clips to create a found poem. (due Friday) -See notes on creating a found poem below.
Friday March 12
1. Timed writing activity #4- See tab labelled Timed Writes for details.
2. Thesis statement practice continued -More practice with thesis statements and brainstorming body paragraph reasons
3. *Do not worry about doing this.* We did not get to this activity on Friday so we will watch these after Spring Break.
Finishing found poems and introduction to slam poetry -You just need to watch the clips and put together your definition of slam poetry and make a list of the techniques these poets use to get their point across when delivering their slam poems.
Week 2- Monday March 29-Thursday April 1
Monday March 29

4. Watch slam poetry examples on youtube and fill in slam poetry note taking sheet. (see handouts below video clips)
5. Discuss answers to handouts. Handout sheet on slam poetry basics. (see handout below) Try writing different lines of slam poetry trying different techniques.

Thursday April 1

4. Silent reading activity- Article- 2020 was the year of Indigenous Activism in Canada -Read article and underline any words you don't know or don't understand -write down words in your silent reading book -look up meanings of the words you underlined -Write down 2 important points from each of the 5 sections of the article in your silent reading book
Tuesday April 6

4. Hand out poetry sheet (see link below) 5. Think of examples for each of the terms on the sheet except for allegory, satire, didactic poetry, stanza, synecdoche, analogy, anecdote, rhyming couplet, litotes, diction, rhyme, rhythm, ballad, concrete poetry, epic, haiku, conceit, tanka. You can use your phones/computers to find examples or think of them on their own. 6. Use slam poetry handouts (see links below) to start on writing a slam poem.
Wednesday April 7

4. Finish body paragraphs for essay practice. 5. Work on slam poem.
Thursday April 8

Friday April 9

Monday April 12
1. Monkey Beach pg. 257-308-Listen and read along while taking notes on note sheet (see handout below) 2. Monkey Beach Reflection #9- Pg.257-308 -Fill in the Blank Reflection sheet. (new questions for reflections- use these to create a 2-3 page reflection where you answer questions to reflect meaningfully on what we read with support of specific reasons, examples and explanations that refer to details or quotes from the novel. If you wish to get higher than a C range grade you must use the new questions instead of the fill in the blank template)
3. 5 paragraph essay assignment- choose one of the topics and write a 5 paragraph essay using all the writing steps given (see handouts below) (Due Tuesday April 20)
4. Work on brainstorming for essay, Monkey Beach Reflections or Slam poems.
Tuesday April 13
1. Monkey Beach pg. 308-374-Listen and read along while taking notes on note sheet (see handout below) 2. Monkey Beach Reflection #10- Pg.308-374 -Fill in the Blank Reflection sheet. (new questions for reflections- use these to create a 2-3 page reflection where you answer questions to reflect meaningfully on what we read with support of specific reasons, examples and explanations that refer to details or quotes from the novel. If you wish to get higher than a C range grade you must use the new questions instead of the fill in the blank template) (see links for handouts on Monday April 12) 3. Continue working on Essays, slam poems and Monkey Beach reflections.
