e) When you hit a block, re-read what you wrote and look to see if you can add any details. Think-What else could I say? How could I elaborate? What details could I add?

Write about what you now know about residential schools, how you feel about them, and what you think should be done to help survivors and their families heal and make things better in the future for 20 minutes. You can just write about the answers to these questions or you can try one of the ideas below.
Possible ideas
a. Pretend you are a child at residential school. Write a letter to your parents. Describe what life is like for you and how you are feeling.
b. Pretend you are a parent of a child at residential school. Write a letter to the government explaining why residential school is wrong and how you are feeling. Explain what residential school is doing to your child, your family and your community.
c. Write a letter to the government detailing what you believe should be done to help survivors of residential school and help those still suffering from inter-generational trauma. Explain how you feel and why things need to be done.
4. Found poems
Creating a found poem
From the notes and writing you have created you are going to be creating a found poem.
Follow these steps:
a. Read through what you have written. Circle or underline any words, phrases or sentences that you feel are important, powerful, express feelings, or are interesting.
b. From the choices you have selected find something most of them have in common.
c. Choose the best 10-15 words/phrases (there can be more if you want)
d. Write them down on your paper in an order that makes sense.
e. Read through what you have and make revisions by adding/deleting/changing words/phrases to make it sound better. You can also re-order them if you feel it improves the poem.
f. Write your finished poem on a new piece of paper and give it a title.

Basic Example: (C-/C/C+)
One prediction I have for the novel is that we will be learning about Anishnabe traditions.
One reason for this is that Keeper talks about the importance of tradition.
For example, he says the "Anishnabe got a good word no one ever argues with...[that makes everything right and okay...TRA-DISH-UN."
This provides support for my prediction because since Keeper says tradition is important, I believe it will play an important part in the novel.
Proficient/Excellent Example: (B/A)
One thing that I think will happen in the novel is that the protagonist is going to become a storyteller.
One reason for this supposition is that Keeper says that his people have always had storytellers, and that the boy has a lot of stories to tell.
For example, in the novel Keeper says that the “…[boy’s] got some stories to tell. Stories ‘bout this reserve, this country, our people, how it feels to be a tourist. How it feels to need someone to show you the way.”
Since Keeper references the boy’s need to tell stories, it is logical that he will become a storyteller.

Thesis statement practice sheet #2- take the best 7 of the 20 thesis statements you created in Thesis statement practice sheet #1 and transfer them to the sheet. Then brainstorm 5 reasons that could be formed into body paragraphs for each thesis statement. Put a star beside the best 3 reasons for each one.
Thesis statement practice sheet #3- take the best 4 of the 7 thesis statements from Thesis statement practice sheet #2 and transfer them to this sheet. Then transfer the best 3 reasons for those thesis statements (the ones starred) to the sheet.
